Ohio Virtual Academy Celebrates Graduates with In-Person Commencement Ceremony

MAUMEE, Ohio–(BUSINESS WIRE)–Ohio Virtual Academy (OHVA), an online public-school serving K-12 students throughout the state, will celebrate the Class of 2019 at an in-person commencement ceremony on Saturday, June 1st. The ceremony will take place at 1 pm at the World Harvest Church in Canal Winchester, outside of Columbus.

Many assume that attending an online public school like OHVA means that students miss out on the ‘real’ high school experiences, but this in-person graduation proves quite the opposite.

This year, OHVA will graduate over 800 students, over 5% more than 2018, with more than 70 students graduating with honors.

Collectively, the class reports having been offered over $1.75 million in scholarships and being accepted to colleges and universities across the country, including: The Ohio State University, University of Toledo, Columbus State University, Seattle Pacific University, and University of Akron.

“OHVA’s Class of 2019 has shown the determination in their education that will serve them well in college and beyond,” said Kevin P. Chavous, president of academics, policy, and schools at K12, and keynote speaker for the OHVA graduation ceremony. “Like most kids, they have struggled, and they have succeeded, but it is these life lessons that will set them up for success as they begin the next chapter of their lives.”

Minahil Mustafa will serve as Valedictorian and plans to attend John Carroll University. Haley Shirley will serve as Salutatorian and plans to attend Kent State University. Both students, as well as Dr. Kris Stewart, Head of School, and Principal Kyle Wilkinson, will be available for media interviews.

Students enroll in virtual school for a number of reasons, including those looking to escape bullying, some who may have fallen academically off track, or those looking for an alternative to the traditional brick-and-mortar classroom setting. OHVA students access a robust online curriculum in the core subjects and a host of electives and attend live virtual classes taught by state-licensed teachers.
