Electric vehicles are sparking more training for first responders
When engineers at Kenworth brought their hydrogen-electric hybrid Zero Emission Cargo Transport (ZECT) Class 8 to Mount Vernon, Wash. they reached out to local first responders to let them know the truck was on site and train them on how to respond should an emergency arise. With a 100-kilowatt battery capable of powering the truck for 240 kilometers carrying 80,000 pounds, and six hydrogen tanks attached to it, the ZECT, while very safe, is also not a vehicle first responders could cut into indiscriminately in a rescue situation – and it’s not alone. Identifying the high voltage cables that give electric vehicles their get up and go is important to keep fire fighters and other team members safe when completing an extraction. As electric and electric-hybrid trucks of varying designs become more popular, the training required will become more complicated. …Read the rest of this story
