Eaton Cummins Automated Transmissions Recalled for Software Glitch

Eaton Cummins Automated Transmission Technologies is recalling more than 1,300 transmissions due to a software error that could allow unintentional movement of the truck.

According to National Highway Traffic Safety Administration documents, the recall affects Endurant Automated Transmissions and the Paccar Automated Transmission based on the Endurant.

The transmission control module may allow engine cranking up to 1 second after the vehicle is powered on if the shift stalk is not in neutral. This means the vehicle could start moving if the engine starts running without the parking brake or service brake applied and the driver has not selected the intended transmission mode for vehicle start.

Eaton Cummins Automated Transmission Technologies has not received any reports of injuries or property damage caused by the issue, but they could result from failing to apply the service brake or parking brake when the engine starts, before selection of the intended transmission mode.

Upon receiving power, the transmission control module software considers the shift stalk in neutral, even if it is in a different position, until the shift stalk reports its act

The transmission issue can be corrected with a software update that prevents the engine starter from engaging until the shift stalk reports it is in neutral.

Eaton Cummins plans to notify manufacturers of equipped vehicles with the transmissions. From there, the manufacturers will issue their own recall to update transmission control module software in affected vehicles. Questions can be directed to Eaton Cummins at 800-477-0251.
