The Alliance for Driver Safety & Security, also known as the Trucking Alliance, has released an addendum to a statement it issued on Nov. 1 that endorses a new study on truck safety conducted by the AAA Foundation for Traffic Study.

That study, “Leveraging Large Truck Technology and Engineering to Realize Safety Gains,” cited four advanced safety technologies that AAA found can greatly reduce injuries and fatalities in large truck crashes:

In the new statement, the Trucking Alliance said it is “asking affiliating carriers to support the deployment of Advanced Safety Technologies (ASTs) in newly purchased trucks that are appropriate for improving their operations. However, the ASTs are not limited to the four technologies in the AAA Foundation, as some news outlets have reported.”

The Trucking Alliance then stated that there is “a wide variety of ASTs available or under development for large trucks, including but not limited to the following:

Forward Collision WarningAdaptive Cruise ControlAutomatic Emergency Braking Systems*Lane Departure Warning Systems*“Blind Spot” Warning SystemsElectronic Stability ControlRoll Stability ControlSpeed LimitersVideo-based Onboard Safety Monitoring systems*Kinematic-based Onboard Safety Monitoring SystemsVehicle-to-vehicle CommunicationElectronic Logging devicesAir Disc Brakes (ADBs)*Brake Stroke Monitoring Systems

*Recommended in the ATA Foundation for Traffic Safety Report

“It should be further clarified that Trucking Alliance carriers do not currently have all of these technologies installed on the approximately 71,000 trucks they are operating on the nation's highways,” the group stated, adding that many of these technologies are still being tested under various pilot projects.

The Trucking Alliance pointed out that some ASTs, such as roll stability control systems, have been in operation by fleets for a decade. “Most carriers are utilizing roll stability control systems. Other technologies, such as video and kinematic-based onboard safety monitoring systems and ‘Blind Spot' mirror replacement systems cited in the list above are ...Read the rest of this story

FTR Transportation Intelligence has announced the conclusion of its business relationships with Noël Perry, principle of Transportation Economics, and Lawrence Gross, president of Gross Transportation Consulting.

Perry has been with FTR for 10 years as its transportation economist and Gross has served as the rail and intermodal expert at FTR since 2009. Perry and Gross will continue in their roles through December to ensure a smooth transition.

Eric Starks, CEO and Chairman of FTR, commented, “On behalf of the FTR team, I want to thank Noël and Larry for their tireless work and the analytical insights they brought to FTR."

“I have had the distinct pleasure of knowing Noël for my entire career in freight transportation. He has broadened my understanding of freight forecasting and the freight markets," Starks continued. "He has the unique perspective of someone who started out working on the docks, then worked his way to the top of the industry.

“Larry was influential in helping FTR translate the forecasting work we were doing into the intermodal and rail sectors," said Starrs. "He has been a vital member of the intermodal community, creating educational content and acting as a key source of intermodal information for the industry.

“Noël's and Larry's perspectives have always been valuable, and I thank them for their contributions to FTR,” he added.

Wabash National has announced the availability of the Truck-Lite Road Ready smart trailer system on its dry and refrigerated van trailers.

The Road Ready system creates a wireless smart trailer ecosystem with a variety of sensors and accessories connected to a solar-powered master control unit. With a military-grade solar panel and an up-to-10-year, quick-charging battery, the MCU continually monitors and transmits crucial data from customizable Road Ready sensors to an intuitive user interface without requiring power from a tractor.

The network data can also be managed via application programming interfaces, allowing it to integrate with existing fleet systems. The network is designed to maximize fleet efficiency and improve CSA performance while providing a return on investment.

"Wabash National is well known for their industry-leading innovations and diversified range of trailer products," said Jon Stineman, US OEM Sales Director for Truck-Lite. "With Road Ready being the next generation of visibility systems from Truck-Lite, we are very excited to be a telematics option on new trailer specifications."

The agnostic system is designed to be compatible with leading ABS, tire and LED lighting systems. Several of the companies that produce monitoring systems have signed on as technical partners, such as Hendrickson and PSI, among others.

Economic Watch: Employment Recovers from Previous Month, Factory Orders Strong

Employers added another 261,000 non-farm jobs to the nation's payrolls in October, but none were from trucking, according to a Labor Department report issued Friday. A separate report showed another good month for the nation's factories.

While the job gains pushed the nation's unemployment rate down to a year 17-year low of 4.1%, the number of job additions was below the 310,000 expected by Wall Street.

The 33,000 job losses that were first reported for September were revised to show 18,000 jobs were gained during the month while the number of job additions in August was revised higher from 169,000 to 208,000.

Since January, the unemployment rate has declined by 0.7 of a percentage point, and the number of unemployed persons has decreased by 1.1 million.

During October, employment in food services and drinking places increased sharply, mostly offsetting a decline in September that largely reflected the impact of Hurricanes Irma and Harvey. Also last month, job gains occurred in professional and business services, manufacturing, and health care.

In the for-hire trucking sector, there were 100 job losses during October while the wider transportation and warehousing sector saw 8,400 job gains, due in large part to increases in the air transportation, couriers and messengers and warehousing and storage categories.

The overall October job gain, and a three-month average of 162,000 job additions per month, are consistent with 2.5% to 3% percent economic growth in the fourth quarter, with steady consumer spending, better business investment and a likely Federal Reserve December interest rate hike, according to John E. Silvia, chief economist at Wells Fargo Securities.

He noted after the strongest monthly gain of the expansion, average hourly earnings growth stalled in October.

“The weak read stemmed in part from the rebound in leisure and hospitality employment, which pays the lowest average wages among major industries,” Silvia said. “Wages ...Read the rest of this story
