When engineers at Kenworth brought their hydrogen-electric hybrid Zero Emission Cargo Transport (ZECT) Class 8 to Mount Vernon, Wash. they reached out to local first responders to let them know the truck was on site and train them on how to respond should an emergency arise. With a 100-kilowatt battery capable of powering the truck for 240 kilometers carrying 80,000 pounds, and six hydrogen tanks attached to it, the ZECT, while very safe, is also not a vehicle first responders could cut into indiscriminately in a rescue situation – and it's not alone.
