Speed limiter comments (Part 1): Fleets support concept, critical of rule’s execution

Big trucking calls on DOT to pick a speed, provide research in support of mandate The Dept. of Transportation asked for public input to determine the setting in the proposed heavy-duty truck speed limiter mandate—and it got it. Much of it from the trucking industry , however, is especially critical of that approach, arguing that regulations should be based on data, not opinion polls

Noregon has released an updated training video series online for the company's JPro Professional diagnostic software.

Videos individually focus on a particular feature or function within JPro Professional and provide viewers with simple instructions to access and use each tool.

“For the training videos, Noregon consulted with ASE-certified technicians and chose the features of JPro that would help service professionals expedite repairs and increase their efficiency levels,” said Jason Hedman, JPro product manager and former technician.

Each video is less than 10 minutes long and provides the training that technicians need to accomplish truck repairs. The video series begins with introductory information like connecting to the vehicle and navigating the home screen and later progresses to more advanced capabilities such as aftertreatment diagnostics, reporting, and bi-directional controls.

The videos complement other resources offered by the company, such as instructor-led online training offered four times a month by Noregon. The hour-long webinars let JPro users watch expert demonstrations and ask questions at the end of each session.

All videos are available for free and will be updated periodically to reflect new features and functions within the software.

FedEx Chairman and CEO Fred Smith warned that President-elect Trump's campaign promises to pull back on international trade agreements could be “catastrophic.”

Smith told the audience at the National Council on Competitiveness Forum, “Trade has made America great, and expanding trade has been a bi-partisan pursuit for over 80 years. The failure to continue to do so would be a severe mistake with enormous consequences for America and the world.”

He noted that while the U.S. is facing many major economic challenges, including slow economic growth, national debt, low federal and business investment, deteriorating infrastructure, increasing protectionism here and abroad, and too many citizens feeling that they're being left behind, these problems should not be blamed on trade.

In addressing the Trans-Pacific Partnership agreement (TPP) negotiated among the U.S. and 11 other countries, Smith said, “We urge the Trump administration to put its stamp on a revised TPP by addressing any concerns it sees, and making any additional improvements to promote trade, rather than restrict it.”

As for the benefits of U.S. trade with Mexico and Canada, Smith advised that while the North American Free Trade Agreement agreement could be updated and strengthened, withdrawal from the agreement “would have massive economic repercussions.” He added, “There are myriad reasons why that would be catastrophic for the U.S. economy” due to the supply chains throughout the region.

NAFTA trade more than quadrupled in 20 years, which boosted the economies of all three countries. Nearly 14 million jobs depend on trade with Canada and Mexico, he said.

“Few people understand how NAFTA has woven the productive capacity of North America into one integrated platform,” he explained. “The United States, Canada and Mexico make so many things together…. The auto industry is a great example. A November 10 Wall Street Journal article cited an example ...Read the rest of this story

Q. What are the benefits of an inverter/charger compared to charging batteries via alternator?

Inverters with built in chargers, are handy when plugging into an external AC plug (like at a truck stop) to keep the batteries charged and to feed the AC loads directly from the shore power. Some Xantrex combination inverter/chargers can even temporarily de-rate the chargers when heavy AC loads are present, like a microwave, to prevent over-current on the shore power, then bring the charger back to full output when the heavy load is turned off.
