Eaze and Code for America Announce First-of-its-Kind Partnership to Help Clear 250,000 Criminal Records

Eaze Donations and Engineering Resources Will Support Ambitious “Justice at Scale” Program in California and Beyond

SAN FRANCISCO–(BUSINESS WIRE)–In celebration of the 4/20 holiday, cannabis platform Eaze and Code for America today announced a first-of-its kind partnership to help clear 250,000 criminal records through the nonprofit’s Clear My Record program.

To kick off the partnership, Eaze will donate $4.20 for every delivery on April 20, up to $100,000, to Code for America’s “Justice at Scale” campaign to support the clearance of an estimated 250,000 low-level, drug-related criminal records. Eaze and Code for America will also explore ways the company can provide engineering support to clear millions of low-level records across the United States.

The partnership gives Eaze customers the ability to help address widely-acknowledged errors from the War on Drugs and reduce the negative impact of cannabis-related convictions while celebrating legal cannabis during 4/20 week.

“Technology can help address the devastating impact of the War on Drugs,” said Jennifer Lujan, Director of Social Impact at Eaze. “Partnering with Code for America has an immediate impact, and is just one way we can all work together to create an equitable and sustainable industry.”

Code for America’s Clear My Record technology opens the door to automatic record clearance at scale. Using the tool, governments are now able to read criminal records and determine eligibility for thousands of convictions in just a few minutes, as opposed to weeks, months, or even years. In California, Code for America is focused on the hundreds of thousands of individuals eligible for expungement under Proposition 64; beyond that, Code for America is focused on helping millions of people nationally get a fresh start.

“Millions of Americans are eligible to clear their records, but the process of record clearance is complicated and costly,” said Evonne Silva, Senior Director, Criminal Justice and Workforce Development, at Code for America. “Our partnership with Eaze will help open the door to jobs, housing and opportunity for hundreds of thousands of Californians by making record clearance automatic.”

Eaze’s social impact efforts include partnerships with Oakland’s Hood Incubator and the San Francisco AIDS Foundation, $1 million to support the Bay Area’s cannabis industry, and an ongoing 25% discount for all U.S. veterans.
