The myPilot mobile app from Pilot Flying J is now integrated into the Transflo Mobile platform, Pegasus TransTech announced Sept. 22.

The integration allows professional drivers to choose a fuel lane based on real-time estimates of waiting time, secure a mobile pin code for cardless fueling and quickly activate the fuel pump with the code.

The app should save drivers time and also includes real-time fuel lane availability updates, mobile payment options, in-app fuel receipts, instant access to loyalty points, routing mapping showing travel center locations and shower reservations.

These features are automatically activated by a geofence developed by Transflo surrounding a travel center. Once drivers enter the geofenced area, they receive an alert indicating the myPilot functions.

The Pilot Flying J app is available to more than 400,000 drivers who use Transflow Mobile. Deployment of the app was expected to be completed by the end of October.

The third-party logistics industry has been growing two to three times faster than GDP, totaling about $157 billion per year, according to Robert Voltmann, president and CEO of the Transportation Intermediaries Association.

During a session Sept. 26 at the TMW/PeopleNet In.Sight user conference in Nashville, Tenn., Voltmann put that growth into perspective saying the 3PL industry was now 1.5 times the size of the beer industry.

Quoting data from DAT, Voltmann said 48% of all large shippers use two to three 3PLs and that 38% use six or more. Furthermore, he noted that 28% of carriers rely on 3PLs as their primary source of freight and that 28% of LTL freight is handled by 3PLs.

Talking about trends within the industry, he said that same-day and next-day delivery are becoming the norm with consumers. More than 87% of the U.S. has internet access and online shopping continues to grow with 66% of consumers expecting next-day delivery for an order placed before 5 p.m. Sixty percent want same-day delivery on orders placed by noon.

Furthermore, Voltmann said that 33% of consumers make their shipping selection based on speed/price of delivery and 28% expect to be able to re-route a delivery. As a result of these consumer expectations, he said recent figures showed that fulfillment costs for Amazon had increased 55% since 2011 with last-mile shipment accounting for 30% of total shipping costs.

On the regulatory front, Voltmann said the upcoming ELD mandate would create some capacity constraints, but he did not think this crunch would be “Armageddon-like.”

Economically, he cited recent number showing the economy growing at a moderate pace and said low energy costs in the U.S. in relation to other countries would benefit U.S. manufacturing, which will in turn benefit trucking.

More than 2,300 people were on hand for a joint user conference hosted by TMW Systems and PeopleNet Inc. Sept. 25-28. Held in Nashville, the 2016 In.Sight Conference represented the first time the two companies, both of which are owned by Trimble, had joined forces on a user conference.

The event featured three days of educational sessions for users of TMW Systems' family of transportation management software and PeopleNet's mobile communications system, new product announcements and technology exhibits from 80 of the two companies' technology partners.

In opening remarks Sept. 26, David Wangler, TMW president said that by working together, “we can transform the way the transportation industry works,” and that by leveraging the two companies' combined experience they could deliver solutions that “no one else can.”

Brian McLaughlin, president of PeopleNet explained the critical element of the companies' working together was the ability to deliver, view and analyze critical information from multiple platforms,” in real time.

Among the things the companies have been working on over recent years are the expansion of TMW capabilities into freight management for shippers, third-party logistics providers and non-asset based transportation companies; capturing more information from trucks while on the road, connected maintenance, route planning and trip management, driver connectivity, safety and compliance and business and market intelligence.

Working with partner ALK, another Trimble company, the companies developed a route and trip management product expected to be brought to market next year called TripInsight, which will automate trip planning. The system will encompass ALK's CoPilot Truck, PeopleNet's mobile devices and TMW's transportation management systems. The system is designed to build optimized trips plans that accounts for fuel stops, hours of service rest breaks, traffic, vehicle and load specifics. It will also feature real-time exception management for ...Read the rest of this story
