UPS is adding 200 new hybrid-electric delivery trucks that feature a 2-cylinder engine and E-GENTM chassis to its alternative fuel and advanced technology fleet.

The vehicles deliver approximately four times the fuel economy of a gasoline powered vehicle, and offer a real time telematics performance monitoring system that provides feedback for energy monitoring and route efficiency, according to UPS.

The trucks will be deployed sometime in January 2017 starting at locations in Arizona, Texas, Nevada, Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia, and Florida.

The technology in the trucks is the same used in the 125 vehicles UPS announced for its fleet in May this year, according to the package delivery company.

“The improvements in these new package cars came from real-world experience in our alternative fuel Rolling Laboratory, which earlier this year hit a 1 billion miles driven milestone,” said Mark Wallace, UPS senior vice president global engineering and sustainability.

The initial 125 vehicles were purchased under UPS's commitment to log 1 billion miles with alternative fuel and advanced-technology vehicles, which it accomplished in August.

ATRI Still Seeking Carrier and Driver Input for Mayo Clinic Survey

The American Transportation Research Instituted is still looking for carrier and driver participation in a set of surveys it launched with the Mayo Clinic on the impact tjhat the National Registry of Certified Medical Examiners has had on the DOT medical exam process.

ATRI and the Mayo Clinic initatiated the set of surveys last month on NRCME and the surveys will remain open to carriers and drivers through Oct. 21, 2016. The research collaboration between ATRI and the Mayo Clinic will quantify how effective the NRCME process is in improving the DOT physical exam process and ensuring that medical examiners understand FMCSA regulations and guidance for issuing medical certificates.

The NRCME was launched in 2014 and since then, medical examiners performing DOT physicals are required to take an approved course, pass an exam, and be listed in the registry before issuing medical certificates.

The research includes three separate date collection surveys, one each for carriers, drivers, and medical examiners. The first two surveys for carriers and drivers are available on ATRI's website. Mayo Clinic distributed the third survey to medical examiners through their targeted network.

Carriers and drivers are encouraged to complete the confidential surveys, available here.

Davco Offers 2 New Diesel Engine Fuel Filters

Davco Technology has released two new Shop Pro fuel filter/water separators, the Shop Pro FXP 95 and the Shop Pro MX designed for heavy-duty diesel engines.

Both models are designed to prime heavy-duty engines, transfer fuel from fuel tanks and to clean contaminated fuel in a vehicle's fuel tank. The Shop Pro FXP 95 is designed for the DD13, 15, 16 engines and the Shop Pro MX is designed for the Paccar MX-11 EPA 2013 and MX-13 EPA 2010/2013 engines.

The Shop Pro eliminates the need to use a hand pump or maintain reserve fuel for priming in a separate tank, according to Davco. It uses the vehicle's fuel tank to prime the engine and runs on 120-volt power. Shop Pro filters and removes contaminated fuel, sediment and water in one operation while transferring fuel or cleaning fuel tanks.

The Shop Pro FXP 95 is designed specifically for use with Detroit DD GHG engines. It provides a higher output pressure to meet the Detroit engine EPA07-GHG14 priming requirements. The FXP 95 is used when replacing the fuel pump or fuel injectors on the Detroit GHG 14 engines. It ensures that the fuel pump two-stage valve opens and the complete fuel system is primed. There is an optional Shop Pro 95 model with a 50 p.s.i. regulator for use on other diesel engines.

The Shop Pro MX is for use on the suction side of Paccar MX -11 and -13 engines. Step by step instructions will allow a Paccar dealer technician to properly prime the MX Engines. As with all Davco Shop Pro's models, the Shop Pro MX can also transfer fuel from fuel tanks and clean contaminated fuel in a vehicle's fuel tank.

The Shop Pro models incorporate an all-in-one fuel processor from Davco, priming and dispensing hoses and a 120VAC motor/pump combination.
