    Trump ups trade pressure on Canada, Mexico; senior Republicans urge rethink

    WASHINGTON/MEXICO CITY (Reuters) - U.S. President Donald Trump increased pressure on Canada and Mexico over trade on Monday, saying the two could avoid being caught in his planned hefty tariffs on steel and aluminum if they ceded ground in talks on a new NAFTA trade deal. Trump also said, after a weekend of tweets in which he threatened to hit German automakers with tariffs, that Mexico needed to do more to stem the flow illegal drugs to the United States, something not encompassed by the talks over the North American Free Trade Agreement. Trump's determination to push ahead with a 25 percent tariff on steel imports and a 10 percent duty on aluminum has prompted threats of retaliation from the European Union, Canada, China and Brazil among others.

    The Committee on Foreign Investment in the United States (CFIUS), which reviews deals for potential national security concerns, does not typically review mergers before companies have clinched an agreement. CFIUS asked Qualcomm to postpone its shareholder meeting, that had been scheduled for Tuesday, by 30 days. Reuters had reported last week that CFIUS had begun looking at Broadcom's bid amid growing pressure from politicians, including senior Republican Senator John Cornyn.

    A 2004 school shooter serving a 20-year sentence wrote a letter in support of the Florida students advocating for gun control

    Jon Romano, a school shooter now serving a 20-year sentence, wrote a letter to a local paper about the incident. In 2004, Jon Romano walked into his upstate-New York high school with a shotgun and opened fire. The then-16-year-old shot a teacher while being tackled by Columbia High School assistant principal John Sawchuk.
